Embracing September: Welcoming Autumn with Positivity and Purpose

When your alarm goes off in the morning at the moment, you may have noticed how it’s just that little bit darker. It’s feeling a bit cooler first thing, the days are getting shorter and there are the first hints of change in colours. The first whispers of Autumn are creeping in. Summer still holds onto the day so it can be tricky to know what to wear. Do you put on the extra layer or brave the early morning chill so you can bask in the midday warmth? Perhaps it feels bittersweet to say goodbye to Summer for another year, especially if you have a love for spending long hot days in the sunshine, but Autumn does have it’s own unique charm and opportunities.

The transition from Summer into Autumn brings with it a new palette of colours. A fresh wave of rich yellows, oranges, reds, golds and browns cascade through nature, hailing the familiar crunch of leaves underfoot and an extra crispness in the air. You can feel nature slowing down and this is the opportunity for us to become a bit more reflective and take a more mindful approach to life. Make the most of the seasonal slower pace and begin preparing for warm drinks and cosy jumpers.

It may not be all rest and reflection though. Many will still have the back to school chaos, work goes on and all the demands on your time stay the same, but if you can find that part of you that falls in line with nature, the peaceful pace of Autumn can bring moments of mindful calm to your schedule.

Embrace Autumn by getting outdoors for walks, bike rides or activities where you can make the most of the cooler weather. If you are fortunate enough to live near areas of natural beauty, it can be a wonderful time to get out there and watch the transition. If you live in a more urban setting, the signs of Autumn can still be appreciates at local parks, gardens and even the trees you pass by in the street.

Remember that paying attention to your own inner transition is just as important as what’s happening on the outside. Check in with yourself and pay attention to your mental and emotional health. How are you really doing? Journaling and meditation are just a couple of great ways to be present with yourself and re-balance.

September is a great time to look back at the intentions you had earlier in the year and reflect on how that’s gone. Did you achieve your goals? Are you getting there or did things get in the way that prevented you starting? There are no right or wrong answers here, whatever your answers are, you can learn from them all. Consider the back to school vibe as a back to learning for all of us, regardless of age, and get inspired to take up a new hobby or personal project. If your goal has remained elusive, perhaps you’ve learnt that what you tried didn’t work and it’s time to try something new to achieve your dreams.

For those who find Summer too hot, too crowded and overwhelming, Autumn is welcomed with open arms as the thrill of cosy jumpers, log fires and hot drinks beckon. For those who love the Summer, the turning of the leaves can bring a sense of sadness and loss. A positive mindset will really help to go through seasons that may not be your favourite. Autumn can be a season of opportunity and growth. Keeping a gratitude journal can help maintain positivity and keep the positive things, events and people at the front and centre of your mind.

As the weather changes and the balmy days fade for a while, staying socially connected can also maintain a positive mindset. Keeping in touch with loved ones, hosting gatherings or joining clubs are all great ways to keep the social energy flowing.

As you feel the fading of Summer for another year and the Autumnal breezes getting stronger, remember this can be a wonderful time for reflection, self-care and growth. Looking to your inner health and balance are a vital part of your overall well-being. The days may be getting shorter but, if you have a positive and creative mindset, you can welcome this season with openness and curiosity. How will you choose to grow this Autumn? What new thing will you try?
